Google Chrome is an open source web browser developed by Google. Its software architecture was engineered from scratch (using components from other open source software including WebKit and Mozilla Firefox) to cater for the changing needs of users and acknowledging that today most web sites aren’t web pages but web applications. Design goals include stability, speed, security and a clean, simple and efficient user interface.

Security:

• Sandboxing – Every tab in Chrome is sandboxed, so that a tab can display contents of a web page and accept user input, but it will not be able to read the user’s desktop or personal files. Google say they have “taken the existing process boundary- and made it into a jail”. There is an exception to this rule; browser plugins such as Adobe Flash Player do not run within the boundaries of the tab jail, and so users will still be vulnerable to cross-browser exploits based on plugins, until plugins have been updated to work with the new Chrome security. Google has also developed a new phishing blacklist, which will be built into Chrome, as well as made available via a separate public API.
• Privacy – Google announces a so-called incognito mode claiming that it “lets you browse the web in complete privacy because it doesn?t record any of your activity”. No features of this, and no implications of the default mode with respect to Google’s database are given.
• Speed – Speed improvements are a primary design goal.

Stability:

• Multiprocessing – The Gears team were considering a multithreaded browser (noting that a problem with existing web browser implementations was that they are inherently single-threaded) and Chrome implemented this concept with a multiprocessing architecture. A separate process is allocated to each task (eg tabs, plugins), as is the case with modern operating systems. This prevents tasks from interfering with each other which is good for both security and stability; an attacker successfully gaining access to one application does not give them access to all and failure in one application results in a “Sad Tab” screen of death. This strategy exacts a fixed per-process cost up front but results in less memory bloat overall as fragmentation is confined to each process and no longer results in further memory allocations. To complement this, Chrome will also feature a process manager which will allow the user to see how much memory and CPU each tab is using, as well as kill unresponsive tabs.

User interface:

• Features – Chrome has added some commonly used plugin-specific features of other browsers into the default package, such as an Incognito tab mode, where no logs of the user activity are stored, and all cookies from the session are discarded. As a part of Chrome’s V8 javascript virtual machine, pop-up javascript windows will not be shown by default, and will instead appear as a small bar at the bottom of the interface until the user wishes to display or hide the window. Chrome will include support for web applications running alongside other local applications on the computer. Tabs can be put in a web-app mode, where the omnibar and controls will be hidden with the goal of allowing the user to use the web-app without the browser “in the way”.
• Rendering Engine – Chrome uses the WebKit rendering engine on advice from the Gears team because it is simple, memory efficient, useful on embedded devices and easy to learn for new developers.
• Tabs – While all of the major tabbed web browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) have been designed with the window as the primary container, Chrome will put tabs first (similar to Opera). The most immediate way this will show is in the user interface: tabs will be at the top of the window, instead of below the controls, as in the other major tabbed browsers. In Chrome, each tab will be an individual process, and each will have its own browser controls and address bar (dubbed omnibox), a design that adds stability to the browser. If one tab fails only one process dies; the browser can still be used as normal with the exception of the dead tab. Chrome will also implement a New Tab Page which shows the nine most visited pages in thumbnails, along with the most searched on sites, most recently bookmarked sites, and most recently closed tabs, upon opening a new tab, similar to Opera’s “Speed Dial” page.

The SeaMonkey Project

The SeaMonkey project is a community effort to develop the SeaMonkey all-in-one internet application suite (see below). Such a software suite was previously made popular by Netscape and Mozilla, and the SeaMonkey project continues to develop and deliver high-quality updates to this concept. Containing an Internet browser, email & newsgroup client with an included web feed reader, HTML editor, IRC chat and web development tools, SeaMonkey is sure to appeal to advanced users, web developers and corporate users.

Under the hood, SeaMonkey uses much of the same Mozilla source code which powers such successful siblings as Firefox, Thunderbird, Camino, Sunbird and Miro. Legal backing is provided by the Mozilla Foundation.

The SeaMonkey Suite

Hamachi will allow you to establish secure direct connections to PCs that are not accessible otherwise due to the restrictions in network setup.

For example, if your home computer is connected to the Internet via Connection Sharing or Broadband Router, you will not generally be able to access it, say, from your office.

By installing Hamachi on both computers and clicking a couple of buttons you can connect them instantly and securely. Now you can browse file shares, run remote desktop or even host a multiplayer game on one computer and join in from another. Just as if they were connected with a physical wire.

Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

Wine is a translation layer (a program loader) capable of running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX compatible operating systems. Windows programs running in Wine act as native programs would, running without the performance or memory usage penalties of an emulator, with a similar look and feel to other applications on your desktop.

The Wine project started in 1993 as a way to support running Windows 3.1 programs on Linux. Bob Amstadt was the original coordinator, but turned it over fairly early on to Alexandre Julliard, who has run it ever since. Over the years, ports for other Unixes have been added, along with support for Win32 as Win32 applications became popular.

Wine is still under development, and it is not yet suitable for general use. Nevertheless, many people find it useful in running a growing number of Windows programs. After the first release of august 2005 the project relaunched an extremely flexible, stable and fast firewall, which was finally finished.

IPFire is new-developed firewall build with the latest releases of Linux 2.6 and tools. You are able to install a lot of add-ons and you will see a firewall can become a home server.

One of the highlight of this security accessories are the extensions to make a real home server out of it. You are able to install additional add-ons to the system with only a few mouse clicks. There are for example:

Changes since previous version

Today, we are releasing Core Update 56 for IPFire 2.11. It is a minor bugfix and security update.

The most exciting new feature can be found in the preinstalled images, that automatically scale up the partitions at the first boot. If you use a 8GB SD card, you install the 2GB image and it will grow the partition sizes to use all space that is available on that SD card.

Note: The minimum required size of flash media has changed from 1GB to 2GB. This is because the / partition was too small for installing bigger addons.

Security updates:

• An update of openssl to version 0.9.8t fixes a security flaw (CVE-2012-0050, upstream information) that could be exploited in a denial of service attack.

Package updates:

• usb-modeswitch: Update to 1.2.2 and database version 20120120. Handles now more UMTS and LTE hardware.

Bug fixes:

• Fix baud rate on flash images. Is now 115200 for bootloader and kernel.
• #10007 Reload static routes after connecting to the internet.
• #10006 Allow “:” character in configuration settings (needed for WEB.DE DSL connections).
• Fix changing passwords of proxy users.
• Fix block device detection for graphs and other scripts (no more floppy devices).
• Fix starting/stopping errors in the openvpn-control binary for net-to-net connections.

Note that during the update, the web server and SSH server will be restarted and you will get disconnected while the update is performed.

We recommend everybody to update, soon and won’t release any more updates for older versions of IPFire.

Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 29000 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine.

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short.

An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the computer and does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs.

Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel. Linux is a piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide.

However, work is in progress to provide Debian for other kernels, primarily for the Hurd. The Hurd is a collection of servers that run on top of a microkernel (such as Mach) to implement different features. The Hurd is free software produced by the GNU project.

Of course, the thing that people want is application software: programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software. Debian comes with over 18733 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) — all of it free.

It’s a bit like a tower. At the base is the kernel. On top of that are all the basic tools. Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian — carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together.

Availability:

FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE is now available for the amd64, i386, ia64, powerpc, powerpc64, and sparc64 architectures.

FreeBSD 9.0 can be installed from bootable ISO images or over the network. Some architectures also support installing from a USB memory stick. The required files can be downloaded via FTP or BitTorrent as described in the sections below. While some of the smaller FTP mirrors may not carry all architectures, they will all generally contain the more common ones such as amd64 and i386.

The purpose of the ISO images provided as part of the release are as follows:

• dvd1 – This contains everything necessary to install the base FreeBSD operating system, a collection of pre-built packages, and the documentation. It also supports booting into a “livefs” based rescue mode. This should be all you need if you can burn and use DVD-sized media.
• disc1 – This contains the base FreeBSD operating system and the documentation packages for CDROM-sized media. There are no other packages.
• livefs – This contains support for booting into a “livefs” based rescue mode but does not support doing an install from the CD itself. It is meant to help rescue an existing system but could be used to do a network based install if necessary.
• bootonly – This supports booting a machine using the CDROM drive but does not contain the support for installing FreeBSD from the CD itself. You would need to perform a network based install (e.g. from an FTP server) after booting from the CD.
• memstick – This can be written to an USB memory stick (flash drive) and used to do an install on machines capable of booting off USB drives. It also supports booting into a “livefs” based rescue mode. The documentation packages are provided but no other packages.

As one example of how to use the memstick image, assuming the USB drive appears as /dev/da0 on your machine something like this should work:

A federal indictment Thursday accused Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders at least $500 million in lost revenue. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to make it easier for authorities to go after sites with pirated material, especially those with overseas headquarters and servers.

The news of the shutdown seemed to bring retaliation from hackers who claimed credit for attacking the Justice Department‘s website. Federal officials confirmed it was down Thursday evening and that the disruption was being “treated as a malicious act.”

A loose affiliation of hackers known as “Anonymous” claimed credit for the attack. Also hacked was the site for the Motion Picture Association of America and perhaps others.

Megaupload is based in Hong Kong, but some of the alleged pirated content was hosted on leased servers in Ashburn, Va., which gave federal authorities jurisdiction, the indictment said.

The Justice Department said in a statement said that Kim Dotcom, 37, and three other employees were arrested Thursday in New Zealand at the request of U.S. officials. Three other defendants are at large.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which defends free speech and digital rights online, said in a statement that, “This kind of application of international criminal procedures to Internet policy issues sets a terrifying precedent. If the United States can seize a Dutch citizen in New Zealand over a copyright claim, what is next?”

Before Megaupload was taken down, it posted a statement saying allegations that it facilitated massive breaches of copyright laws were “grotesquely overblown.”

“The fact is that the vast majority of Mega’s Internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay. If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the DOJ said its web server for justice.gov was “experiencing a significant increase in activity, resulting in a degradation in service.” It was working to fix it and “investigate the origins of this activity, which is being treated as a malicious act until we can fully identify the root cause of the disruption,” the agency’s statement said.

A spokesman for the Motion Picture Association of America said in an emailed statement that the group’s site had been hacked, although it appeared to be working later in the evening.

“The motion picture and television industry has always been a strong supporter of free speech,” the spokesman said. “We strongly condemn any attempts to silence any groups or individuals.”

Megaupload was unique not only because of its massive size and the volume of downloaded content, but also because it had high-profile support from celebrities, musicians and other content producers who are most often the victims of copyright infringement and piracy. Before the website was taken down, it contained endorsements from Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Kanye West, among others.

The company listed Swizz Beatz, a musician who married Keys in 2010, as its CEO. He was not named in the indictment and declined to comment through a representative.

According to the indictment, Megaupload was estimated at one point to be the 13th most frequently visited website on the Internet. Current estimates by companies that monitor Web traffic place it in the top 100.

The five-count indictment, which alleges copyright infringement as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering and racketeering, described a site designed specifically to reward users who uploaded pirated content for sharing, and turned a blind eye to requests from copyright holders to remove copyright-protected files.

For instance, users received cash bonuses if they uploaded content popular enough to generate massive numbers of downloads, according to the indictment. Such content was almost always copyright protected.

The site boasted 150 million registered users and about 50 million hits daily. The Justice Department said it was illegal for anyone to download pirated content, but their investigation focused on the leaders of the company, not end users who may have downloaded a few movies for personal viewing.

A lawyer who represented the company in a lawsuit last year declined comment Thursday. Efforts to reach an attorney representing Dotcom were unsuccessful.

Megaupload is considered a “cyberlocker,” in which users can upload and transfer files that are too large to send by email. Such sites can have perfectly legitimate uses. But the Motion Picture Association of America, which has campaigned for a crackdown on piracy, estimated that the vast majority of content being shared on Megaupload was in violation of copyright laws.

The website allowed users to download some content for free, but made money by charging subscriptions to people who wanted access to faster download speeds or extra content. The website also sold advertising.

The indictment was returned in the Eastern District of Virginia, which claimed jurisdiction in part because some of the alleged pirated materials were hosted on leased servers in Ashburn, Va. Prosecutors there have pursued multiple piracy investigations.

Steven T. Shelton, a copyright lawyer at the Cozen O’Connor firm in New York, said opponents of the legislation are worried the proposals lessen the burden for the government to target a wide variety of websites. Shelton said he expects to see the government engage in more enforcement in the future, as technology makes it easier to catch and target suspected pirates.

“I think we’ll be seeing more of this,” he said. “This is just the beginning.”

Dotcom, a resident of both Hong Kong and New Zealand, and a dual citizen of Finland and Germany, made more than $42 million from the site in 2010 alone, according to the indictment.

Dotcom had his name legally changed. He was previously known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor. He is founder, former CEO and current chief innovation officer of Megaupload.

Officials estimated it could be a year or more before Dotcom and the others arrested in New Zealand are formally extradited.

The others arrested were Finn Batato, 38, a citizen and resident of Germany, the company’s chief marketing officer; Mathias Ortmann, 40, a citizen of Germany and resident of both Germany and Hong Kong, who is the chief technical officer, co-founder and director; and Bram van der Kolk, aka Bramos, 29, a Dutch citizen and resident of both the Netherlands and New Zealand, who oversees programming.

Still at large are Julius Bencko, 35, a citizen and resident of Slovakia, the site’s graphic designer; Sven Echternach, 39, a citizen and resident of Germany, head of business development; and Andrus Nomm, 32, a citizen of Estonia and resident of both Turkey and Estonia, head of the development software division.

Several sister sites were also shut down, including one dedicated to sharing pornography files.

Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, Busybox, Tiny X, Fltk, and Jwm. The core runs entirely in ram and boots very quickly.

It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access.

The user has complete control over which applications and/or additional hardware to have supported, be it for a desktop, a netbook, an appliance, or server, selectable by the user by installing additional applications from online repositories, or easily compiling most anything you desire using tools provided.

About Our Project

Our goal is the creation of a nomadic ultra small desktop capable of booting from cdrom, pendrive, or frugally from a hard drive. The desktop boots extremely fast and is able to support additional applications and hardware of the users choice. While Tiny Core always resides in ram, additional applications extensions can either reside in ram, mounted from a persistent storage device, or installed into a persistent storage device.

We invite interested users and developers to explore Tiny Core. Within our forums we have an open development model. We encourage shared knowledge. We promote community involvement and community built application extensions. Anyone can contribute to our project by packaging their favorite application or hardware support to run in Tiny Core. This project is mature. However, as you can see it’s a one-man-project, there are still some bugs and missing features. If you have any question or suggestion about this project, please post them on the forums. As well, if you have any feature requests, you can always make the demand, but there’s no guarantee that I’ll implement it.

You’re encouraged to translate Notepad++ (if it is not present in the Download Section) and/or to translate the Notepad++ official site into your native language.

The modification of document in one view will carry out in another view (i.e. you modify the SAME document when you are in clone mode).
• Regular Expression Search/Replace supported – You can search and replace one string in the document by using the regular expression.
• Full Drag ‘N’ Drop supported – You can open a document by drag & drop. You can also move your document from a position (or even a view) to another by drag & drop.
• Dynamic position of Views – The user can set the position of the views dynamically (only in 2 views mode: the splitter can be set in horizontal or in vertical).
• File Status Auto-detection – If you modify or delete a file which opened in Notepad++, you will be notified to update your document (reload the file or remove the file).
• Zoom in and zoom out – That’s another fantastic function of Scintilla component.
• Multi-Language environment supported – The Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hebrew Windows environments are supported.
• Bookmark – User can just click on the bookmark margin (located right side of line number margin) or type Ctrl+F2 to toggle a book mark. To reach the bookmark, type just F2 (Next bookmark) or Shift+F2 (Previous bookmark). To clear all bookmarks, click the Menu Search->Clear All bookmarks.
• Brace and Indent guideline Highlighting – When the caret stay beside of one of those symbol { } [ ] ( ) , the symbol beside of caret and its symmetric opposite symbol will be highlighted, as well as the indent guideline (if any) in order to locate the block more easily.
• Macro recording and playback – You can save several macros and edit their keyboard shorcuts for the next use.

HTC previously took pains to lock down the bootloaders on its Android devices, preventing users from rooting them to install custom operating system builds. After some backlash, HTC recanted, and Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO, said in May that the company would no longer be locking the bootloaders. However, the ultimate outcome seems slightly different: the text of the HTCDev post reads “we will allow our bootloader to be unlocked for 2011 models going forward,” suggesting phones may continue to be locked on release—but now, customers can unlock with the company’s blessing.

Of course, “allowing” is different than “supporting.” HTC warns customers that unlocking their devices may mean they’re no longer covered under warranty. The company also notes that unlocking the devices may cause unintended side effects, including overheating.

Phones that support the unlocking tool currently including the HTC Amaze, EVO View 4G, Design, Flyer, myTouch 4G Slide, and the Sensation. According to Gigaom, several developers have discovered the tool also works on models including the Rezound, Vivid, Rhyme, and Thunderbolt.

This sounds like a great way to get an early install of Android 4 on HTC devices!

Cobian Backup exists in two different versions: application and service. The program uses very few resources and can be running on the background on your system, checking your backup schedule and executing your backups when necessary.

Cobian Backup is not an usual backup application: it only copies your files and folders in original or compressed mode to other destination, creating a security copy as a result. So Cobian Backup can be better described as a “Scheduler for security copies”. Cobian Backup supports several methods of compression and strong encryption.

TeamViewer 7 is now available for Windows, Mac and mobile operating systems such as Android or Apple’s iOS. The Linux download page lists version 6 as the latest.

The developers have added a lot of new features to the remote access software. It is a long list divided into the two core areas Remote Control and Meeting.

Remote Control

All users benefit from performance optimizations. Especially direct connections, file transfers and working with TeamViewer Manager have seen performance improvements. The new media features, e.g. screenshot creation during remote control sessions or the AVI converter make life easier in specific situations. The option to display multi-remote screens on a 1:1 scale may be interesting as well to some TeamViewer users.

SmartPlanet colleague Tuan C. Nguyen provides a surprisingly simple technique for deriving a strong password that makes it difficult for hacking programs to arrive at the right brute force combination — employing a symbol in combination with an upper-case and lower-case letter.

Not everyone thinks that strong passwords are the answer, however. In another study on passwords, a Microsoft researcher conducted a cost/benefit analysis of  efforts to encourage stronger passwords, and questions whether the costs of strong password management outweighs the benefits.

Internet Explorer can only dream of the wonderful extensibility of Firefox but with an ever bloating feature set and the pace of browser upgrades comes complexity. Firefox is a moving target. Unlike the glacially slow upgrade path of Windows, Firefox is the very paradigm of open source/free software development. It has gone through more upgrades than Steve Ballmer has launched patent lawsuits, and because it is free software, professionals and keen amateurs can tinker with it to destruction—and frequently do.

Extensions are just XPI files: standard zip files containing an install script or manifest at the root of the file and some data files. They are perhaps the best feature of Firefox but herein lies the Achilles Heel of the wunderkind of browsers. Many extensions are maintained by private individuals on their own websites and may get out of sync with later releases of Firefox (this is true even on the official Mozilla Addons website!). Fortunately Firefox (and indeed the whole Mozilla suite—Thunderbird and Sunbird) is free, W3C compliant and based on a cross platform, extensible interface called XUL (pronounced zool). Once you know that and can use various web programming tools, you have the keys to the kingdom and that knowledge and keys provide you with the confidence and skills to keep your extensions working with Firefox.

Firefox without extensions is like Laurel without Hardy, Bush without Blair (sorry, little bit of politics there) so it will seem a little anorexic to run it without them and, even worse, to upgrade for the latest features and discover that one or more extensions has now been disabled. This article will look at various ways to retrieve the situation by hacking the Firefox profile manually, editing the Firefox preferences, installing an extension specifically to do it the easy way and troubleshooting extensions problems generally.

NOTE: You will be dealing with Firefox install files and profiles; so, prepare for potential disaster and backup your profiles, extensions and any other valuable data!

Firefox Preferences

On of the best things you can do is to ensure that Firefox extension upgrades do not happen automatically. To ensure that this cannot happen and give yourself some breathing space open Firefox and select Edit→Preferences, go to the Security tab and check Warn me when sites try to install add-ons:

In the Advanced tab it is perfectly safe, indeed sensible, to leave the Automatically check for updates to installed add-ons checked, but do not automatically accept a prompt to upgrade Firefox unless you are confident that it will not break any of your extensions.
